Guidelines

Practices

Practices will be held on weekday evenings and will last approximately one hour.  In the U-6 division, the coaches may keep it to 45 minutes.  Practice times may be moved up if you start running out of daylight to practice.

Players need to bring/wear the following items for practice (not supplied by the league):

  • Shorts, T-shirt and socks
  • Shin guards
  • Sneakers or cleats
  • Water bottle or something to drink with child’s name written on it

Games

Games typically start at the following times but age distribution and the number of teams in each age division may affect scheduling:

  • U-6   - 9 am and 10 am
  • U-8   - 9 am, 10 am and 11 am
  • U-10 - 9 am and 10 am
  • U-12 - 9 am and 10 am
  • U-16 - 11 am and 12 noon

The specific schedules will be posted on the website. Players should arrive at the field at least 15 minutes before game time.

Players in the U-6 (and sometimes U-8) divisions get tired especially near the end of the game, and there will be a lot of switching the kids in and out.  During this time your child may want to sit with you.  To make it easier for the coaches and players to get onto the field when needed, we ask that the families sit directly behind the teams’ side.  For all age divisions, the goal is to have each child play at least half the game.

Some coaches (especially in the younger age divisions) may ask parents to participate by providing a fruit and/or healthy snack for the players after each game. If you sign up to do this, please ask the other parents about any food allergies.

For games, players need to bring:

  • Shorts and socks (their own)
  • Sneakers or cleats (their own)
  • Shin guards (their own)
  • T-shirt (supplied by the league)

Water will be supplied by the league.

Weather

Games will be canceled if it is raining or if the fields are too wet to play on.  The League will try to post any cancellations on its website by 8 a.m. on Saturday mornings.  Coaches will also try to reach you at home or any other number provided.  If practice is canceled, the Coach will contact you at the number provided on your registration form.

Parents’ Responsibilities

Fill out the registration form completely and legibly (online registration is preferable).
Be on time for practices.
For the younger age groups, please stay for practices.  Practices may end earlier due to weather or tiredness.
Players need to arrive 15 minutes prior to game time on Saturdays.
For the younger age groups, parents should sit on the team’s sideline so that we may find our players quickly when it is their time to go in.
Sign up to be the Team Mother or Father to help the Coach in whatever way he or she needs.
Contact the Coach if you are unable to make a game or practice.

BE POSITIVE AND HAVE FUN!

This is recreational soccer; the focus is on participation and having fun. The SOKS Board is committed to the concept that every child should have the opportunity to play at least ½ of every game.  Coaches in the younger age divisions tend not to keep score, wanting the players to learn good sportsmanship, the fun of being part of a team and respect for one another, while they improve their skills in soccer.  Especially in the younger age groups, some coaches are coaching for the first time.  Support them in any way you can.  Working with your kids at home will reinforce the skills we work on in practices.  Lastly, we all want our kids to succeed, so please remember during games and practices to try and keep all comments, cheering and shouting positive and constructive.
